Power Supply and Load Development

Requirement of power    :

The requirement of power for the state for all categories of consumers has been gradually increasing year after year. Taking all sources of growth in the demand into account, the 16th Electric Power Survey of India had assessed the year-wise requirements of power and energy for the state as under   :
16th Electric Power Survey's forecast

Particular 97-98 98-99 99-00 00-01 01-02 02-03 03-04 04-05
Peak Load (MW) 126 117 129 142 156 172 189 208
Energy Requirement (MU) 451.6 481 529 584 643 708 780 857

Availability of power and energy    :

The power supply of Manipur depends entirely on the share of power allocated from Central Sector Power Plants like, Loktak Hydro Electric Project ( Manipur ), Kopili and Khandong HE Project ( Assam ), Assam Gas Based Power Project at Kathalguri ( Assam ), Agartala Gas Turbine Power Project at Ramchandranagar ( Tripura ), Doyang HE Project ( Nagaland ), Ranganadi HE Project ( Arunachal Pradesh ), Eastern Regional Electricity Board, Meghalaya State Electricity Board.

The State does not have much generating capacity. Its own generation is negligibly small. Energy available from the Central Sector/State Sector Generations and Energy purchased during the last five year are shown below   :

Particular 1998-99 1999-00 2000-01 2001-02 2002-03
Energy purchased ( MU) 375.667 392.743 355.624 379.826 427.184
Free Energy from Loktak HE Project (MU) 63.241 60.294 65.538 67.755 65.647

    Total     : 439.665 453.860 421.576 448.218 496.408

Shortfall   :

The demand of power in the state has always surpassed the supply. This has been proved by the demand and supply relationship shown below.

Demand Met

Year Peak Power Requirement (MW) Peak Demand met (MW) Energy Requirement (MU) Energy Demand met (MU)
1998-99 117 94 481 439.67
1999-00 129 97 529 453.86
2000-01 142 87 584 421.58
2001-02 156 93 643 448.22
2002-03 172 108.5 708 496.41

Note     : The peak demand met and energy drawn are consistently lower than the actual peak demand and energy requirement due to restriction on industrial use during the peak load hour and imposition of load shedding programme. The restrictions are imposed to arrest the outstanding arrears on purchase of power from Central Sector Agencies keeping in view the low budget provision and difficulties in realization of revenue returns. Sufficient power is however available in the North Eastern Region which can be drawn on demand.

Load Growth and Load Drawal Pattern   :

The load growth in the State is very fast and is mainly from domestic and micro-industries. The peak period falls in the evening. Winter loads are more than summer loads.
