Diesel & Heavy Fuel based Power Generation
The Power Department has given top priority to the
Generation Schemes to make up the peak demand
shortfalls. As a policy matter the Department has
taken up many generation schemes under short-term and
long-term measures.
Hydro Generation :
The hydro potential of Manipur, assessed at
60% Load Factor by the Department, is 1350
MW. However it could not be harnessed fully
due to paucity of fund.

Diesel / Heavy Fuel Generation
:
As hydel projects take a long time to
construct it became imperative that the
department take up Diesel/ Heavy Fuel based
power project as a short term measure to meet
the power demands of the state.
The State has many Diesel Generating Stations of
various capacities and make located at strategic
locations throughout the state. These power house are
run only when there is a Grid failure and during the
lean season when Hydel generation in the NE Region are
drastically reduced due to shortage of water in the
reservoirs.
Besides and above the small Diesel Generating Set the
state also has a Heavy Fuel Based Power Plant
(6x6 MW) at Leimakhong. It was commissioned and
dedicated to the people of Manipur by His Excellency
the President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
on 5th of October, 2002. This Power House is only
operated during the Peak Hours as standby. The
installed capacity of this project could not be
utilized fully due to non-availability of transmission
line for evacuation of the power. The line could not
be constructed due to shortage of State Plan fund and
Central assistance.
The various Diesel and Heavy Fuel based Power houses
with their installed capacities and their respective
locations are tabulated below :

Energy generation of the State
:
As stated above the diesel and micro
hydel power houses owned by the state
run during peak load hours as
standby. The year-wise net generation of energy in
Million Unit (MU) from these " State Owned "
Diesel and Hydel power houses is shown below.
